Spring is just around the corner. With more time than ever spent at home, it’s the perfect opportunity to prepare your house for the upcoming season. Your friends at Gaudette Insurance have compiled a list of tips for spring maintenance.

Prepare the Air Conditioner: One way to plan for the spring is to prepare your air conditioner. We all know the summer months can be quite uncomfortable without the proper cooling system. Start by cleaning the air conditioner thoroughly before testing it. Then, wipe off any dirt and dust from the surface. Make sure there aren’t any objects in the fins blocking air from escaping. According to Armstrong Air and Heating, when the AC unit is not cleaned properly, it has to work harder to cool your home, leading to a hefty electricity bill.

Scrape the Grill: Did you know that char marks create carbon deposits? These deposits allow grease and other condiments to stick, often holding bacteria. It’s important to prepare your grill to ensure it is safe to use. There are a few different options when it comes to cleaning the grill. Consider using a scrubbing tool such as a wire brush. You can visit your local hardware store for tools and liquid solutions. Make sure whatever fluid you choose is safe for contact and consumption. Scrape your grill using pressure to remove any excess charcoal and grease.

Clean the Deck: During the winter months, your deck can undergo extreme weather impacts. Consider cleaning your deck to prolong the condition of the area. Sweep the surface and scrub to get tough stains and marks out of the wood. Homeowners can decide to use a pressure washer for larger areas that require more attention. Once you’ve finished cleaning the surface of the deck, find a liquid solution at a local hardware store that protects the wood against water and other potential damages. The coat will ensure your deck lasts longer over the course of the season.

Check the Basement: Over the winter, we all avoid going down into the cold basement. With the warm weather quickly approaching, it’s essential to check the basement for any water damage. Possible water damage can ruin paint, carpet, and other important belongings. It can also lead to other severe problems such as mold. In the U.S., 60 percent of homes have water in their basements, and 38 percent lead to mold. Make it a habit to regularly inspect your basement and move important objects to higher ground in the event that water damage occurs.

Examine the Gutters: Checking the gutters is important for all homeowners. Leaves, dirt, and other debris can gather and block them from working properly. If the gutter fails to move water away, it can lead to long-term damage. Take a look at this list of ways to inspect your gutters. Make it a habit to examine the area a few times a year to prevent any problems from occurring.

With the warmer weather arriving soon, we can’t wait to go outside and appreciate the beauty all around us. Gaudette wants to make sure you and your home are prepared so you can enjoy the spring season without any problems. Contact Gaudette Insurance today to protect your home.
